Introduction: This hands-on course will explore art materials and techniques for K-6 teachers.  Students will learn how to develop age-appropriate lessons using collage, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture.  Both stand-alone art projects and projects that integrate art with other subjects will be emphasized.  Students will create a portfolio of their work and keep sketchbook/journals during the semester. 


Note: I have changed several assignments for this semester .We won't use acrylic paint (too expensive for you to buy all the colors you'd need) and I have changed the printmaking work so you won't have to buy $20 brayers and special inks. Also, we will not use regular clay for our sculpture strand, since we can't fire it in the kiln.


I have added weekly assignments to do in your sketchbook/journal, and they are going to be counted as 25% of your grade. 

 

Course Objectives: 

At the end of the course, students will: 

Be comfortable with a variety of art materials and techniques 

Understand how art lessons can drive academic learning 

Be able to analyze their own work and the work of others 

Have a broad understanding of art education concepts 

Know what is age-appropriate for the various elementary grades 

Have knowledge of the art elements, visual arts standards and principles of design 

 

Attendance and Lateness: Be in the Zoom at the appointed times. If we make a private Zoom appointment, be sure attend, as well. If you have problems, laert me ahead of time.

 

Grading:  Individual grades will be given for projects and averaged together to make up 65% of your grade.  Your sketchbook/journal will count for 25% and attendance and participation at online meetings will count as 10% to total 100%. NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO MUSEUM TRIP OR PAPER.

     

2/3   CLASS #1-Introduction and Syllabus 

          "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" Collage (with materials from around 

           the house.) DUE NEXT WEEK.

Homework: SEND ME YOUR ADDRESS AND A CHECK OR VENMO FOR $48.  PLEASE KNOW THAT BUYING THESE SUPPLIES ON YOUR OWN WOULD  COST YOU MUCH MORE! Read the Bats Article. Also, upload your collage to 

  me as a jpeg.

                   
2/10    CLASS #2- Discussion of Bats by Jane Bates and Share of Collages. 

What are the art elements?

         Medium: A Barrage of Collage. DUE NEXT WEEK. NOTE: THIS PROJECT   

WILL BE CHANGED IF SUPPLIES HAVE NOT ARRIVED.

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, make a collage that will indicate whose 

sketchbook this is. You can use letters, words, images (drawn or photos or from 

magazines and such) or all of the above. Gather supples for next week’s 

assignment.


2/17   CLASS #3-What are Visual Arts Standards? What are Habits of Mind?

          Medium: Pop-Out Page. DUE NEXT WEEK.

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, Do a Zentangle Page.


2/24   CLASS #4- Using Art for Academic Learning

Medium: Articulated Puppets.

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, collage a “Ransom Note”. Make it 

funny, if possible.


3/3    CLASS #5-What do a Lesson Plan and Art Unit look like? 

         Medium: Moving Eyeball Portrait

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, Draw “What Gladys Saw”.



3/10 CLASS #6-Materials Tutorial: all about brushes, pencils, paint, paper, etc.

Medium: Finish Portrait; Begin Exquisite Corpse Book

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, choose an “Art Problem” and draw it.



3/17 CLASS #7- What are Rubrics/Grading/Assessment/Peer-to-Peer Assessment? 

Medium: Finish Exquisite Corpse Book; Begin Tunnel Book

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, draw a four-panel comic or else design 

a t-shirt for an enemy. For extra credit, do both.


3/24 CLASS #8- Classroom Management 

           Medium: Finish Tunnel Book (Cover is Optional)

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, Draw three examples from the noun/adjective game.


3/31 SPRING BREAK-- Please work on unfinished work, if possible.

       

4/7 CLASS #9- Creativity, Teaching for Artistic Behavior and Child Choice.  

Medium: Printmaking: Collagraphs

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, draw a nightmare or a dream.


4/14 CLASS #10- Process Versus Product 

           Medium: Paper Mache Masks

           Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, draw/collage your feelings about the  

           Coronavirus.


4/21 CLASS #11-Safety in the Art Room-Age Appropriateness, etc.

           Medium: Paper Mache Masks (Finishing with Optional Tissue Paper Glaze) 

or 333painting.

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, draw a pile of laundry OR what’s inside 

one of your wastebaskets or garbage bins.


4/28 CLASS #12-Talking about Art

           Medium: Clay Techniques-Portrait Busts/Puppet Head

           Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, draw a simple still life.


5/5 CLASS #13- Step Outside; Using the Community and Institutions to Drive 

Learning

Medium: Bas-Relief on Cardboard

Homework: In your Sketchbook/Journal, draw what you see out any window.


5/12 CLASS #14--Julia Hacks for Art in the Classroom

            Medium: Free Choice. Put Me to Shame with your Creativity! 

            Homework: Upload all work  in the form of jpegs. Label with your name 

           and the assignment.


5/19 CLASS #15-FINAL EXAM and Group Power Point and Share

TOOLS & SUPPLIES

It is expected that everyone will have the following at home:

Internet and a computer, iPad or phone for Zooming and black and white print

•regular pencil, 2B or 3B or 4B

•white eraser

•good, sharp, small scissors

•clear tape

•masking tape

•white glue (not School Glue); Elmer's Glue-all is best

•stapler and staples

•aluminum foil

•stack of newspaper

•odd pieces of cardboard, cardboard toilet paper rolls, etc. 

•white computer, printer or copier paper


For a $48 charge, I will send you the following items, which you can keep. Note that the postage alone is $21.50, so you will get all these supplies for what is actually $26.50. The actual value of each box is $59.50, since Crayola sent me some supplies when I won New York City Art Teacher of the Year in 2020. 


TRULY, do not try to buy these on your own. My experience is students end up buying the wrong things and spending much, much more money in the end.


The box I will send you will include:
